Tubular – A radical new mid-scale lounge

SIXINCH USA designs unique lounge chair with industry leader Populous

SIXINCH® USA, the leader in unique environment solutions, on Mar. 17 announced a radical new mid-scale lounge to their evolving portfolio. Designed by award-winning architecture firm Populous, the Tubular chair brings comfort and style by utilizing five layers of mixed-density foam along with unique bent metal tubes that create independent, floating cushions.

“We wanted this chair to be reminiscent of the bent tube chairs of the 70’s but with a contemporary design featuring oversized, pillow-like cushions,” said Josh Sweazy, Director of Sales for SIXINCH USA. “The details of this chair are what set it apart from its mid-century predecessors, including a slightly flared stance at the base and unique accent bands around the perimeter of the two independent cushions,” said Sweazy.

The Tubular chair rethinks the role of the pillow. What was once just a piece is now the core of the design. All about softness, the chair’s large, overstuffed seat and back cushions feature layers of mixed density foam and are every bit as comfortable as they appear. The burly tube frame also adds a bit of whimsy with its smooth bends and cheerful powder coat options. The distinctive accent band adds a little dimension and the option for a pop of color, continuing the Tubular chair’s playfulness throughout.

“Our design teams studied the elements of seating needs and played around with the basic building blocks of a chair,” said Adam Stover, Senior Principal at Populous. “Taking inspiration from pillows, we wanted the entire chair to be both physically and visually comfortable, and the Tubular chair achieves that.”

Over the next few years, SIXINCH plans to create and introduce a wide variety of products to bolster their already strong coated foam offering. Product categories of focus will be lounge, café, modular sectionals, and occasional tables. Populous will assist SIXINCH on multiple soft seating projects as well as suggestions for current portfolio improvements.

“Introducing products designed by the top sports architecture firm in the world is incredibly exciting,” said Sweazy. “SIXINCH looks forward to creating a new line of innovative products with Populous that will help our brand evolve and grow.”

Other collections from Populous’ product design studio include the Pleat Collection with Tuohy Furniture in 2020, the Persona Collection with Neinkamper and the Canyon Collection with Bright Furniture in 2019, the Steve Collection with David Edward in 2018, and Lutta Collection in collaboration with Martin Brattrud in 2017. Populous’ latest collections will debut at this year’s NeoCon in October.
