Pablo Designs at ICFF – New Product Launching

Emerging directly from Pablo Designs’ research studio-lab and with a perfect balance of elegance and fun, San Francisco innovative lighting company PABLO DESIGNS unveils a new range of sophisticated and ingenious lighting for 2016. In this new collection Pablo Pardo has collaborated with furniture and product designer John August who has long been renown for his innovative and technically precised design. These two designers, with very different and expressive styles, have both captured the essence of functional yet sculptural lighting, transforming a mere toolfor lighting spaces into an opportunity for original dialogue between sculpture and design.

The new collection welcomes novel visual languages to the Pablo Design catalog, and deepens the brand’s historic exploration of the endless possibilities that new technologies bring to lighting. Giraffa and Vella, will be revealed at this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair from May 14th to May 17th, 2016 in New York.

Giraffa – Desk Light

Smart and playful, the new Giraffa Desk Lamp features and expressive purity of form and warm, tactile finishes that give the object a personal feel.

Giraffa’s endearing personality and versatile design are at home anywhere: on your desk, atop a nightstand, or tucked into a cozy reading nook. A 360° rotating shade combined with an angled post provides multiple lighting possibilities, allowing this petite lamp to cast both direct and ambient light. Giraffa is available in a trio of premium finishes: brushed copper, black anodized aluminum and gloss white lacquer. Giraffa’s warm and fully dimmable LED light source is rated for 50K hours to provide a lifetime of personal enjoyment.

Giraffa has been designed by John August for Pablo Designs. “Giraffa was born from the playful experimentation of intersecting cardboard tubes. Even though the initial exploration was about the geometric relationships between these tubes, and the interesting ways the tubes “mitered” together and positioned the light source, a distinct personality began to develop. The subtle changes in angle created corresponding changes in attitude and persona. And finally Giraffa emerged” says John.

Machining techniques for shaping the tube end “miters” and protocols for the mechanical connection of the metal tubes were created for the original prototype. Later the manufacturing technology was changed to more efficient techniques for mass production.

Giraffa was originally conceived in copper, and later expressed itself also in gloss white lacquer and black anodized aluminum; iconic finishes that subtly shift Giraffa’s endearing personality in other beautiful directions.

About John August:

Located in San Francisco, August is a furniture and product designer. As an accomplished craftsmen and machinist he employs a hands-on approach to the design and engineering of objects, always in pursuit of the space between art and function. Equally at home with traditional hand tools, 3D modeling software, or advanced CNC machinery, August explores the still point between the deep soul of the hand-made with the precision of quality mass-production. “As long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by the unfolding harmonies of geometric forms as they areapplied to sculpture and design. As the idea of a circle takes on mass in the form of a sphere, a cylinder, or a tube, a physical form is realized.” August’s designs revel in that translation from ideation to materialization. August studied art and design at Cooper School of Art, and Brooks Institute of Photography and Fine Art.
