New Pella Crafted Luxury Lecture Series Announced for Chicago’s Architectural Community

Year-long series will provide attendees with continuing education credit

Pella Crafted Luxury, a 7,000-square-foot permanent showroom in LuxeHome® at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, has announced The Pella Crafted Luxury Lecture Series, a year-long array of demonstrations and presentations with nationally prominent and local speakers sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA and AIA CRAN), the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), and the Chicago Chapter of the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art (ICAA). All lectures will be free and provide attendees with one learning unit of continuing education credit.

“The Pella Crafted Luxury showroom is equal parts art gallery and retail space, created to inspire and inform,” said Annette Bravard, Pella’s vice president of sales and marketing. “After working with our friends within the Chicago architectural community, the next logical step was to host The Pella Crafted Luxury Lecture Series for attendees to expand their education.”

Each presentation of The Pella Crafted Luxury Lecture Series will begin with a light reception at 5:30 p.m. The highlighted speaker(s) will take the stage at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Andres Duany, FAIA, DPZ Architects, Miami – March 17, 2016

  • Best known as the designer of Seaside, Florida, among other residential communities, Duany is one of the founders of the New Urbanism movement. The recipient of the 2008 Richard H. Driehaus Prize, he will talk about his firm’s residential and town planning projects. Lecture cosponsored by ICAA and AIA Chicago’s Custom Residential Architects Network.

Careers on the Rise: Three Young Architects Discuss Their Paths to Success – April 7, 2016

Geoffrey Baer and Dan Protess from WTTW – April 11, 2016

  • Baer and Protess will preview and discuss their three nationally syndicated PBS programs focusing on the 10 Homes, Parks, and Towns that changed America. Program cosponsored by Society of Architectural Historians.

Merrill Elam, AIA, of Mack Scogin and Merrill Elam Architects, Atlanta – May 19, 2016

  • While this award-winning Atlanta firm is best known for its libraries and other institutional buildings, has amassed a portfolio of spatially complex, inventive, cutting-edge modern houses which will be the subject of Merrill Elam’s presentation. Lecture cosponsored by AIA Chicago’s Custom Residential Architects Network.

Giving Voice to Architects: How Richardson, Sullivan and Wright Continue to Inspire Architects Today – June 16, 2016

  • Brief presentations on Richardson, Sullivan and Wright by three Chicago architects, including Stuart Cohen, FAIA, of Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker Architects (Evanston) and Aric Lasher, FAIA of HBRA Architects (Chicago), will be followed by a lively moderated discussion. Symposium cosponsored by SAH, Frank Lloyd Wright Trust and The Glessner House Museum

Movie Night Host: Milos Stehlik, founder of Facets and WBEZ movie critic – July 21, 2016

  • Milos will introduce the first of two movie nights devoted to architecture on film. He will screen L’inhumaine, directed in 1924 by Marcel L’Herbier, one of the legendary achievements of early French cinema in a newly restored version, with modernist sets designed by the architect Robert Mallet- Stevens and by Fernand Léger.

Merchandise Mart Design Chicago – September 14, 2016

  • As part of the Mart’s Design Chicago programming, the Chicago Chapter AIA CRAN will present “The Iconic House, Two.” Presentation and panel discussion with local architects moderated by Julie Hacker, FAIA Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker Architects (Evanston). Program time to be announced.

James Strickland, founder of Historical Concepts LLC,  Atlanta – September 22, 2016

  • Strickland will speak about the residential work of his firm. Strickland and his partners combine classical and southern vernacular residential architecture in inventive ways to produce traditional houses informed by their unique sensibility. Lecture cosponsored by the ICAA.

Movie Night Host: Milos Stehlik, founder of Facets and WBEZ movie critic for – October 6, 2016

  • Milos will introduce and screen Contempt by Jean-Luc Godard. Contempt is Godard’s critique of Hollywood movie making. The film features legendary German film director Fritz Lang (Metropolis, M) as a film director, and sets the second half of the movie at one of the 20th century’s most iconic houses, the Casa Malaparte on the Isle of Capri. Co-starring with the house are Brigitte Bardot and Jack Palance.

Ted Flato, FAIA, of Lake/Flato Architects, San Antonio – October 20, 2016

  • Flato will speak about his firm’s houses, which incorporate industrial materials, exposed wood, and steel structures, and a strong regional vernacular to create some of the most original modern American houses of the last 30 years. Lecture cosponsored by the AIA Chicago’s Custom Residential Architects Network.
