HDR is excited to announce that Usman Tariq, PE, LEED AP BD+C, CEM, PMP, associate managing principal in Alexandria, has received Building Design+Construction magazine’s 40 Under 40 award.
He will be honored today at the 5th Annual Under 40 Leadership Summit in Chicago, which convenes more than 100 current and past 40 Under 40 winners and other young AEC industry leaders for leadership training, professional development and networking.
Tariq is flattered to have won the award and to represent HDR at the Summit. He is most looking forward to networking with his peers and learning about their perspectives on excellence at work. Always looking for ways to enhance his personal and professional growth, he sees the Summit—and the award—as an ideal way to do that.
With more than 13 years of design and project management experience in healthcare, science and technology and mission-critical work, Tariq oversees the operations for an architecture and engineering staff of 90. He also acts as a mechanical /electrical engineering principal on key projects.
He credits the company culture for being where he is today.
“At HDR, a lot of people are invested in your success,” he says. “So the credit is due all around.”
Referred to as a “change agent” by Building Design+Construction magazine, Tariq says the title is appropriate due to his work as part of a team on internal objectives including project management standardization, a change management initiative for the employee performance appraisal system and the transition from AutoCAD to Revit MEP in his office.
Tariq is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland. This was a rare opportunity when he was asked to fulfill the position since he was a part-time graduate student at the time. He was also a lead engineer on one of the most challenging projects in the office, reflects Terry Williams, senior vice president.
“He is often one of the first to volunteer for any new initiative, and he has a ‘can-do’ attitude,” Williams says. “Over the past five years, I have seen him grow from an astute technical expert to a well-rounded leader.”
