Friedman Benda will premiere two new limited-edition series by contemporary designers Marcel Wanders and Paul Cocksedge at PAD London Art + Design 2015, October 14 through 18, Berkeley Square, London.
This will be the first showing of Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ personal editions since his record-attendance breaking solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 2014, and his first public viewing with Friedman Benda since the preview of his Crochet chair in “Smart Deco” at Design Miami Basel in 2006. Works from two new series reveal Wander’s reinterpretation of the ‘portrait’. Mirrors are rendered as animated figurative abstractions, while the Egg Bookshelf is a more sculptural interpretation of the portrait. Wanders’ preview at PAD London will be followed by a solo exhibition, premiering additional personal editions, at the gallery in Chelsea in late February 2016.
British designer Paul Cocksedge returns to the fair after having been awarded the Moet Hennessy PAD London annual prize for best design for his “Poised” table in 2014. Cocksedge will reveal works from his revolutionary new Freeze series, followed by a full solo exhibition at Freidman Benda in New York two weeks later. A continuing theme in Cockedge’s work is to achieve simplicity in the use of materials, with minimal interference. In Freeze, he exploits freezing temperatures to create a seamless bond between metals that otherwise do not adhere in nature.
