TALK: Pandemic Impacts and the Future of Urban Mobility (Buro Happold)

With empty streets a central image of the global pandemic and reopenings appearing on the horizon, cities worldwide are rethinking what mobility looks like in a successful urban ecosystem. What will it look like to move through urban spaces in a post-Covid world?

To hear directly from the experts shaping this future, join Buro Happold for a virtual panel at 12:30pm EST on Thursday, June 4th. The public event, “Adaptive Cities in a Post-Covid Era: The Mobility Sector,” is free to access with registration at this link.

This panel of planners, policy makers, public health officials, and corporate leaders — moderated by mobility expert Francesco Cerroni of Buro Happold’s Cities practice — will describe how urban mobility may evolve as a result of Covid-19, with examples and insight from across the United States.

The discussion will explore topics including how cities can shift from temporary solutions to permanent infrastructure and behavioral changes, the role of public transportation, the emergence of bicycles and micro-mobility, and how private industry can help encourage positive adaptations.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically altered how cities operate, and how people move within them,” says Buro Happold’s Francesco Cerroni, who has led sustainable transportation work in urban areas ranging from New York and Detroit, to Moscow, Nairobi, and Shenzhen, China. “Right now, we’re facing a tremendous opportunity to shape the future of our urban environments. Buro Happold is convening this group of thought leaders to explore how the public and private sectors can collaborate on a near and long-term revolution— with the goal of making cities more accessible, more livable, and more equitable for all residents.”

As leading advisors consulting globally on pandemic response, climate vulnerability, sustainability and more, related recent works by Buro Happold include research on modeling people flow and movement to aid social-distancing measures, studies on creating new pedestrian districts in Manhattan, and large-scale plans for transforming the Erie Canal and other underutilized public infrastructure into valuable assets for recreation and economic growth.

This is the second in a new series of virtual forums hosted by Buro Happold. The first event, held on May 19th, explored the post-pandemic recovery of arts, culture, and media industries.
