New Arc|Com Upholstery Patterns: The Artisan Collection
The Arc-Com design studio is proud to present the Artisan Collection– a group of five patterns that celebrate the techniques associated with handcrafted materials.
An artisan is a skilled craft worker who makes or creates objects by hand that may be functional or strictly decorative. Artisans practice a craft, and may through experience and aptitude, reach the expressive level of an artist.
The patterns in the Artisan Collection (patterns Geostitch, Tritik, Loara, Brayer Flower and Ombre Petal) were inspired by different crafting techniques from around the world.
Pattern Geostitch finds its inspiration from traditional Kantha stitching, which is a type of embroidery found in eastern South Asia and is often practiced by rural women. Kantha stitching is used to make simple quilts from old saris and cloths. Pattern Geostitch is a contemporary interpretation of this type of quilt where the simple stitched lines frame the triangular pops of color. Though woven on a modern electronic loom, pattern Geostitch captures the irregular line work associated with hand stitching.
Pattern Tritik takes its inspiration from the stitching and dying technique after which it was named. Tritik stitching is a small running line of stitching that is slightly gathered and is typically used with a tie dying method to create bold designs. This technique is often used in African textiles. Pattern Tritik makes a unique design statement by combining a small dot ground with a graphic circular motif and weave structure that mimics the effects of tie dying.
A printmaking technique was the inspiration for pattern Brayer Flower. In printmaking, a small roller called a brayer is used to transfer ink from plate to paper. For pattern Brayer Flower a roller (or brayer) was used to spread ink onto a vintage beaded trivet. The printed image was translated as the allium-esque flower motifs. The resulting small printed petal shapes were tossed in a random patterning method on a solid colored ground. An ombre effect was applied to the woven version of the image, which not only adds color, but creates beautiful depth and dimension as well.
By deconstructing the flower motif, pattern Ombre Petal becomes a rhythmic allover coordinate to pattern Brayer Flower. Pattern Ombre Petal employs the same ombre technique that allows for color and movement within the overall design.
Pattern Loara was inspired by traditional cross stitching. Cross stitching is a popular form of embroidery in which X-shaped stitches are tiled to form a picture. The earliest known cross stitch sampler was created by Loara Standish, daughter of Captain Miles Standish, and is currently housed in Plymouth Massachusetts. Pattern Loara rotates the X, typically found in cross stitch embroidery, into a plus shape to create a fine, multicolored allover pattern.
All of the patterns in the Artisan Collection were colored so that the different designs could be used together in whatever combination designers prefer. The colorations for the Artisan Collection were targeted towards the healthcare and hospitality markets and include sophisticated neutrals (both light and dark), a range of blues and greens, and a dramatic black and red combination, which coordinate across the patterns. All of the patterns in the Artisan Collection exceed 100,000 DR and are bleach cleanable at a 4/1 ratio.
