Introducing New Ethereal Lighting by Christopher Moulder

Atlanta-Based Designer Continues to Merge Lighting & Art with Sculptural Forms that Transform Residential and Commercial Spaces

Christopher Moulder, a creative mastermind of poetic lighting and composer of light, presents two new collections: The Royals and The Forest. Characterized by integral light sources, sculptural silhouettes, and interesting shadow effects, the limited edition chandeliers, pendants and sconces are a continuation of Moulder’s oeuvre, seamlessly marrying design and art with an airy, mystical quality. His work embodies a flow and visual rhythm that leaves indelible signatures on the spaces they inhabit, making them truly unique for architects, designers and private collectors.

A Jacksonville, Florida native, Christopher Moulder drew inspiration from sand, water, wind, clouds and the violence of electrical storms, from a young age. These influences are evident in the sense of movement created via the delicate and specific placement of light sources: “Light is how I create movement. I don’t see sculpture as static. In fact, without light it’s not seen at all,” Moulder explains. Although his lighting does serve the practical purpose of illuminating a room, it is also an exploration of light in relation to sculpture – giving the pieces an additional function as decorative art installations. Moulder takes an experimental approach, cutting, heating, freezing, dissolving, and then testing the resulting effects, all before settling on a final product design. He has developed and honed his craft over a 22 year-long career, creating limited edition and one-of-a-kind lighting solutions for various private and corporate clients including J. Crew, the Hard Rock Hotel, and various Macy’s locations. His two newest collections are beautiful examples of how nature and magnificence have influenced his work.

Like much of Moulder’s work, The Forest is an abstract approach towards lighting, translating the essence of an object or idea into a illuminated sculpture. Drawing inspiration from the essence of various flora and fauna, each piece in the collection features strong shapes with slim bits of material, creating an intricate yet delicate form.

● Branch is a chandelier with an aqueous form, crafted from aluminum, PVC, and phosphor bronze. Wispy coils with small loop end bulbs extend from each solid “arm,” creating a sense of movement while making the lighting well dispersed.
● Mushroom evokes the lush, edible texture of its namesake with 400 vanes of crumpled Nomex paper forming the base of the light. The lamp-worked borosilicate glass nipple is lit by its own reflector bulb with a dichroic colored lens, providing a myriad of hues.
● Oiseaux, named after the French word for birds, is a wall sconce with a sinuous, lightweight skeletal form that appears to float from the wall. Made of fiberglass, aluminum, neoprene and steel, it can be rotated within 70 degrees using a ball and socket joint that locks into the desired position.
● Stag is a wall sconce made from nylon, aluminum, bronze, and PVC. Similar to Oiseaux, it features linear projections that create interesting shadow effects. The tiny bulbs are placed delicately at the ends of the metal loops giving a very delicate, “starry” feel.

The two chandeliers in The Royals collection are defined by large celestial disks with a series of bulbs evoking a cluster of stars. Demonstrating the variety in Moulder’s work, the lights achieve the opposite visual impact of The Forest through color, flexibility and the creation and emphasis of negative space. Each piece is like a fictional character
● Lady Heather features delicate moiré patterns spinning from every angle. Available in two sizes, an adjustable angle of inclination and a variety of colors – from red and black stilettos to a bride’s white boudoir – the chandelier exhibits a variety of feminine personalities to suit every environment.
● Princess and the Pea calls to mind the classic fairy tale, appearing nearly two-dimensional except for the “pea” – implied in the negative space created with 24 small light bulbs that form a lacy pucker in the ⅛” thick disk. The chandeliers are available in silver, white or red, making a statement as a singular fixture or staggered in swarming groups at different heights and angles.
