IIDA NY & IDLNY Join to Promote Rights of NY Interior Designers

Right now, certified interior designers are facing a major roadblock. Despite years of experience and qualifications, interior designers cannot pull permits to start construction on a project or submit technical drawings to local building jurisdictions for building permits.

Instead, their work has to be approved and submitted by an architect or engineer — even if the work is for nonstructural interior spaces. Why? Because interior design is a developing profession, the ability to submit drawings for permits has not been recognized in most states. But stamp and seal legislation allows qualified interior designers to literally stamp and seal construction documents for submission to local officials for approval.

To confront this, The International Interior Design Association New York Chapter (IIDA NY) has joined forces with The Interior Designers for Legislation in New York (IDLNY) to launch a letter writing campaign to convince legislators to help protect the rights of interior designers in New York State, and move forward bills vital to advancing the profession.
