The International Interior Design Association’s New York Chapter (IIDA NY) is excited to announce the appointment of Katie Michael-Battaglia as Chapter President. IIDA NY is a professional organization that unites A&D professionals in the New York area, providing them with networking opportunities, educational events and charitable initiatives.
Michael-Battaglia is succeeding Rebecca Dorris Steiger, Certified Interior Designer and LEED Accredited Professional with more than 20 years experience in corporate interiors and space planning experience. “Being chapter president requires you to represent a diverse community,” said Dorris Steiger. “Katie’s unique background working with so many different designers makes her a perfect fit because she understands all the varying points of view.” Michael-Battaglia has been a member of the New York Chapter since 2002, serving as the vice president of membership from 2008 2009, and has worked with the Leaders Breakfast committee since 2011.
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, Michael-Battaglia always knew that she wanted to pursue a design career. As an undergrad, she completed various competitive internship programs, and was hired by California-based RMW Architecture & Interiors right out of school, working as a junior designer. Michael-Battaglia has a strong background in commercial, educational, and cultural projects with experience working in cities around the world including New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and London. Always wanting to give back and foster the development of young designers, Michael-Battaglia has lent her expertise teaching interior design courses at the Parsons School of Design and California College of the Arts. Currently, Michael-Battaglia is the design director at Nemo Tile Company, where her work focuses on showroom and layout design as well as decision-making and research relating to new products. As design director, she works closely with designers and manufacturers offering personalized client services and ensuring that all products are being communicated effectively.
“I’m excited to begin my tenure as IIDA NY’s president,” said Michael-Battaglia. “This organization has been a necessary tool for me to connect with so many talented people in the community, elevating my designs and skills, and I look forward to furthering its initiatives.”
During her year-long tenure as chapter president, Michael-Battaglia will provide inspiration to New York’s design community. She plans on finding creative ways to engage members and those outside of the tightknit architecture and design industry by developing exciting forums and outreach programs. Michael-Battaglia’s goal for 2016 is to offer speakers that inspire IIDA NY event attendees, so that audience members can walk away feeling creatively stimulated.
“As I prepare to stepdown, I know that the New York chapter is in great hands,” said Dorris Steiger. “With Katie’s knowledge and experience, this organization is sure to reach new heights, and I can’t wait to see where Katie takes it.”
