FLOS Presents “Jewels after Jewels after Jewels” Lighting Installation For Fuorisalone

On the occasion of Fuorisalone – Milano Design Week 2018, Flos presented, at the brand’s Milanese showroom in Corso Monforte 15, a spectacular lighting installation by London-based, Cypriot-born designer Michael Anastassiades, celebrating the launch of his new collection of chandelier Arrangements. This exhibition – named: “Jewels after Jewels after Jewels” – coincides with the 2018 worldwide launch of the collection to the A&D industry and shows the true capabilities for the new design. Arrangments modules were interwoven to create works of lighting art as hanging scultures throughout the space, each as a commentary on the relationship between pendant lighting and pendant jewelry.

“I have always been fascinated with the parallel that exists between Lighting and Jewelry. Starting from the simple fact of how each piece relates to the human scale: one is designed to be worn on the body whereas the other is made to decorate the space someone occupies. I’m challenged in how the delicate nature of something small can be translated spatially and still manage to retain its preciousness in the way materials are presented. It is no coincidence that the word ‘pendant’ has a double meaning. Existing both as a piece of jewelry that hangs from a chain worn round the neck, and a light designed to hang from the ceiling.” – Michael Anastassiades

Midway between a light sculpture and an industrial design object, Arrangements is a modular system of geometric LED elements that can be combined in multiple compositions as single or even connected chandeliers. The modules are easily fixed together electrically and mechanically, balancing perfectly on each other to create the dramatic effect of a big chain of light. Each combination can be changed any time, with a different order, type or quantity of elements, with no need of technical assistance.

The magnificent Milan installation expanded throughout the entire Flos showroom, while the long vitrine in the external atrium previewed the concept of this extraordinary lighting project with a sophisticated display of miniaturized geometries, combined in the shape of a Flos logo.

Visitors discovered, in a very simple, intuitive way, through dedicated tablets, how to configure their own chandeliers in lots of original combinations, starting from each single element, according to their needs or purely their liking. The configurator is called ‘Make your Arrangements’ and is available on the web site. Researched and developed by Flos, it is characterized by a user friendly language which allows users to compose and save their desired configuration of Arrangements.

Michael Anastassiades has been working successfully with Flos since 2013. The light objects he has designed over the years, including String Lights, IC Lights, Copycat and Captain Flint, have won top industry awards and been hugely successful with the international public. The poetic nature of his designs, combined with his skillful use of highly innovative lighting technology solutions, makes every work unique and surprisingly emotional.
