Dathe Wong, OAA, LEED AP, has joined HDR’s architecture practice in Toronto as Education, Science, and Technology (E|S|T) Principal.

A passionate advocate for using design to create culturally rich, sustainable spaces, Dathe comes to HDR with over 20 years of design leadership and construction experience. He has worked on a wide range of award-winning projects in Ontario and Eastern Canada, from community spaces and residence halls to health science buildings.

“Dathe is a true practitioner — equally at ease designing, managing and pursuing projects,” shares Walter Gaudet, Managing Principal for the architecture practice in Ontario. “He has led some of the most noteworthy higher education projects in the province. After admiring his work for many years, I am incredibly pleased to count him as a partner.”

An architect at heart, Dathe is committed to seeing conceptual ideas take shape through ideation, planning, design and ultimately through the construction process. His work to date has allowed him to explore the differences between graduate and undergraduate living/working environments, the spatial qualities that support inter-professional learning, how campus transformation responds to new learning pedagogies, and how outdoor learning and gathering spaces manifest values of multiculturalism.

“Dathe’s interest in advancing new ways of learning while creating memorable spaces will greatly contribute to our growth in Eastern Canada and beyond,” states Steve Riojas, Global Director of E|S|T at HDR. “We’re very fortunate to have Dathe on our emerging Education team within the E|S|T sector.”

The education sector has been a focus for Dathe throughout his career, which has included roles at both Stantec Architecture Ltd. and Dunlop Architects. An avid proponent of both social and environmental responsibility, Dathe has presented at a number of conferences on topics ranging from sustainable building practices to the student experience.
