Celestial Illumination: Work Amongst the Stars with SONNEMAN’s Constellation

In his latest exploration of architecturally-scalable, systems-based illumination, lighting designer Robert Sonneman has achieved a stunning, modern abstraction of celestial imagery.

Designed to be assembled into precise arrangements that form fixture configurations, SONNEMAN—A Way of Light’s new Constellation is a sculptural group of star-like LEDs in a fixed relationship to each other that combine to form patterns along a running path. Illumination radiates through either white optical acrylic lenses or sparkles with refracted light through micro-faceted clear acrylic crystal lenses.

Constellation configurations are extremely innovative, with each fixture built from hubs made of 14 LED diodes, connecting arms of 15 different sizes, and cable ceiling hangers. Available pre-configurations include:

  • Aquila — The eagle that carried Zeus’s thunderbolts embodies the mythological reference to this stunning sculptural configuration. Aquila is available in two sizes (Minor and Major), and can be suspended as individual sculptures or clustered with others to form a spectacular arrangement of magical constellations.

  • Ursa — Driven by multiple LEDs on each side of the connecting hubs, illumination radiates through smooth white domes or sparkles with refracted light through micro-faceted diffusers. Ursa is available in two sizes (Minor and Major), and can be arranged in a variety of combinations to produce architecturally-scalable light.

“Freed from the limiting restrictions of heavy electrical components, we now see our lighting designs as an architecture of structural art with the potential for multiple configurations, infinite expandability and a variety of luminaire possibilities,” says Sonneman of the new collection.
