American Biltrite: New Cleaning and Disinfection Guidelines – Making informed flooring decisions based on science

American Biltrite Releases New White Paper about Response of Rubber Floor Coverings to Disinfectants Registered on the EPA List-N

American Biltrite releases a new White Paper sharing laboratory test results that evaluated the response of resilient flooring products to increased disinfection protocols. Findings revealed that across all products studied, American Biltriteā€™s ABPUREĀ® NfuseĀ® provided the most positive response to active ingredients present in over 350 EPA List-N healthcare disinfecting agents, implying that it is the easiest flooring to clean and disinfect.

More than ever, institutions rely on rigorous cleaning and disinfection protocols to limit the spread of community-acquired infections using disinfectants registered on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) List-N, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Choosing hygienic, durable, and easy-to-clean flooring becomes essential and can further strengthen existing cleaning and pathogen control efforts.

ā€œOur rubber floors have been used in healthcare applications for over half a century. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, all commercial and institutional environments are evaluating the implementation of CDC guidelines.ā€, said Stephan Freiberg, R&D Project Leader. ā€œWith that in mind, we performed tests using a methodology based on ASTM F 925 to observe the behaviour of resilient floorings exposed to an increased level and frequency of disinfection, preferably using disinfectants from EPA List-N.ā€

The response of rubber floor coverings to disinfectants was evaluated according to three criteria: attack (surface cracking, deformation, or significant degradation), color change and tarnish (finish change). Compared to the other rubber floorings, ABPURE Nfuse was the surface with the greatest tendency to remain unchanged when exposed to disinfectants, showing superior color, stain, and tarnish resistance.

ā€œAt American Biltrite, we place a great deal of importance on continuous product development, research and innovations. For the current pandemic and beyond, environmental factors such as the choice of flooring material and required performance characteristics are key in supporting public health and safety. We wanted to share the results of evidence-based examinations about rubber floor cleaning and disinfection with the design community in order to help them make informed flooring decisions based on scienceā€, said Victor Caldas, Vice-President of Research & Development.
