Dallas Is #2 Among the Largest Data Center Markets in the U.S. [New 42Floors Report]

A new report on data centers is now available online from 42Floors.

Digital infrastructure assets have become a hot investment. With that in mind, we wanted to see how U.S. markets had fared over the past decade in terms of data center space. Our analysis looked at CommercialEdge data center sales and development data from 2012 through 2021 in 90 U.S. markets, and ranked the top 20 data center markets by sales and construction.

In our article you can find the top 20 data center markets by sales volume, by space added in the past decade, and by size. We also ranked the largest data center property sales in the last 10 years.

The Dallas data center market was second only to D.C. in terms of sheer size and inventory growth. It added 5 million square feet of new data center space since 2012, reaching a total of 14 million square feet at the close of 2021.

Here are some highlights for the Dallas market:

  • The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex saw the second-largest data center inventory growth in the U.S. between 2012 and 2021 — developers here added 5 million square feet of new data center space to the market, representing a nearly 57% market expansion.
  • Dallas-Fort Worth was also the second-largest U.S. data center market at the close of 2021, with data center space here encompassing nearly 14 million square feet.
  • The Texas metro made it in the top 20 markets by sales volume as well, at #12 with $186.1 million in transactions.
