Research Design Connection: Build in a Coffee Corner

Work by Welsh and team indicates the value of designing coffee corners into many types of spaces. The group reports that “Employees are getting less sleep, which has been shown to deplete self-regulatory resources and increase unethical behavior…caffeine moderates the relationship between sleep deprivation and depletion by replenishing self-regulatory resources.” Study participants who were sleep deprived but chewed gum that dispensed as much caffeine as in a 12 ounce cup of coffee were significantly more likely to behave honestly than people who had not chewed the caffeinated gum, even when they were encouraged by someone on the research team to behave dishonestly.
