Panel & Tour Dec. 4: Making Maker-Spaces for K-12 STEAM Schools (Svigals+Partners)
To get the most from a K-12 school’s curriculum focused on STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and math — educators and students need school buildings that support the same goals. A December 4 public talk and school tour in Connecticut will address just that: How school districts and administrators plan today for these complex, mission-critical buildings.
On Monday, Dec. 4, 3:30pm at the recently opened Engineering & Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) on the campus of the University of New Haven, a panel will describe effective strategies and solutions for STEAM school design. A key focus is the use of maker spaces — including labs, computer rooms, and fabrication shops for hands-on student learning — and how schools are planned to support this learning method.
ABOUT ESUMS
Designed to support the latest trends in STEAM learning for students in grades 6-12, the innovative, 122,000-square-foot ESUMS school facility represents a new breed of educational environment: a five-story “maker campus” where architecture and art merge with a vibrant STEAM curriculum aimed at improving student outcomes.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Hosted by architecture, art and advisory firm Svigals+Partners, the panel titled “The Mega-Makerspace: New Ideas in Maker Buildings for STEAM Education,” includes expert presenters behind the innovative new ESUMS building, who will address leaders from schools and educational groups around the region.
Combining a facility tour and a panel discussion, the event is led by Julia McFadden, AIA, associate principal with Svigals+Partners and project architect for ESUMS. She will moderate the talk among panelists including: ESUMS principal Medria Blue-Ellis; Richard Therrien, science supervisor for New Haven Public Schools; Vincent Wilczynski, deputy dean of the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science; and Ronald Harichandran, Ph.D., dean of the Tagliatela College of Engineering at the University of New Haven.
