Design Student Summit SCALE Makes Move to GATHER National Conference

SCALE AT GATHER To Provide Networking Opportunities and Professional Insight to Students

SCALE, the American Society of Interior Designers’ (ASID) annual event for student designers, is joining forces with GATHER: The National Conference by ASID. Held in Miami from Sept. 21-24, 2022, the student summit will offer interior design students and emerging professionals a range of opportunities to connect with industry professionals, engage in relevant educational content, and explore the larger world of design that GATHER has to offer.

“ASID’s SCALE at GATHER programming will offer our current students— and future design leaders—an introduction to the profession unlike any other,” said Gary Wheeler, FASID, ASID CEO. “In bringing our student attendees together with practicing design professionals, we hope to provide the next generation of designers the ability to grow their network of practitioners across the nation and gain rich insight into how design can influence and impact lives in their future careers. SCALE at GATHER will provide students with professional guidance and the resources needed to launch their careers and navigate the industry.”

SCALE at GATHER will commence with a welcome from ASID CEO Gary Wheeler, FASID and ASID National Board of Directors Chair Carolyn Noble, ASID, WELL AP, WELL Faculty. Following the kick-off, a presentation by ASID 2021 Designer of Distinction Joey Shimoda, ASID, FAIA and Shimoda Design Group Partner Susan Chang, AIA will detail the role of inspiration and storytelling in the design process.

Student-centric programming will include exclusive Miami-based tours offering an in-person look at office culture and different design solutions across firms, along with product and material exploration. Pre-registration is open now and is required for tours, which will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Key presentations from industry leaders will be held throughout the conference. Jennifer Kolstad, ASID, AIA, will lead “Your Place in the Profession” and discuss the possibilities available through different career journeys. Kay Sargent’s, FASID, CID, LEED AP, WELL AP, “Evolution of the Workplace” presentation will look at the future of work and how workplaces will continue to evolve. GATHER’s “Design to Thrive” will be led by Studio O+A Partners Primo Orpilla, ASID and Grace Eun, ASID as they share insight on their career journeys for students to use to inspire their own industry niches. ASID’s recent award-winners – of the Student Portfolio Competition, Student Chapter Awards, and ASID Foundation Scholarships – will also be honored, followed by 2021’s Ones to Watch scholars detailing their experiences navigating the profession.

SCALE at GATHER breakout sessions with industry-leading speakers are designed to inspire and challenge student participants, while providing practical tips and tactics that can be applied to how they work. Networking opportunities will be available throughout the conference and appointments can be made for students to receive feedback on their portfolios, resumes and tips for their job search.

Additional education opportunities are available for students and interior designers. GATHER will offer a wide selection of CEU hours, including nine Health, Safety and Welfare CEUs. Students will have a range of opportunities, as the conference will also host a total of six workshops with one dedicated to SCALE, 50 pop-ups with eight exclusively for SCALE, and seven roundtable discussions with one for SCALE.

About ASID

The American Society of Interior Designers believes that design transforms lives. ASID serves the full range of the interior design profession and practice through the Society’s programs, networks, and advocacy. We thrive on the strength of cross-functional and interdisciplinary relationships among designers of all specialties, including workplace, healthcare, retail and hospitality, education, institutional, and residential. We lead interior designers in shared conversations around topics that matter: from evidence-based and human-centric design to social responsibility, well-being, and sustainability. We showcase the impact of design on the human experience and the value interior designers provide.

ASID was founded over 40 years ago when two organizations became one, but its legacy dates back to the early 1930s. As we celebrate nearly 85 years of industry leadership, we are leading the future of interior design, continuing to integrate the advantages of local connections with national reach, of small firms with big, and of the places we live with the places we work, play, and heal.
