The Battery, “Building of the Day” for October 30

The sixth-annual Archtober, New York’s monthlong, citywide architecture and design festival is hitting its stride, and there’s nearly three weeks still to go!

A little taste of the goings-on: just yesterday saw the Great Architectural Bake-Off at Gallery 151 in Chelsea, Manhattan, and a sold-out Building of the Day tour of the Department of Sanitation’s new garage and salt shed–designed by Dattner and WXY–just a little further downtown in Soho. There’s much more on offer in the coming days. You can plan ahead and get tickets in advance by visiting archtober.org, or just stop by the Center for Architecture and meet up with friends at softLab and Pentagram’s Archtober Lounge (image below), to peruse guides and program information in a cave-like installation of polyhedral walls and ceilings. Here’s a small sampling of upcoming events from just one weekend of Archtober, October 28-30:

  • Pumpkitecture! An Archtober first: 20 New York City-based firms live-carve extraordinary gourd-based structures to compete for the coveted Pritzker Pumpkin. Family fun October 28th from 6pm-8pm at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place in Greenwich Village.
  • Panel at the Guggenheim: “The Consequence of Design”: Jessica Helfand moderates a discussion of “the heritage of the design profession and its eventual legacy within the ecological, social, and service spheres.” With design critic Ralph Caplan, graphic designer Milton Glaser, and architect Beverly Willis. October 29 from 6pm-8pm at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
  • Saturday Sketching: Also at the Guggenheim, October 29 (and every Saturday in Archtober) 10am-4pm. Get inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and record your perspective through drawing.”
