The modern office is becoming a more holistic one. People are steadily becoming more aware of the impact their surroundings and the spaces they occupy have on them, in life and in work. To keep pace with this, designers are creating spaces with all the senses – taste, sight, touch, smell and sound – in mind. And somehow, in the workplace, a person’s sense of sound is still mostly problematic. Most people will acknowledge the impact sound can have on their experience of a space. But do they truly understand the strength of the undercurrent sound has on a space? Research shows that poor acoustics can influence attention and distraction, a person’s sense of privacy, creative flow, happiness, stress levels, and of course, productivity.
