WSP USA’s Jeffrey Smilow Receives Leader of Industry Award From the CIB

Jeffrey Smilow, executive vice president and director of building structures at WSP USA, formerly WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, has received a Leader of Industry Award from the Concrete Industry Board (CIB).

Mr. Smilow has over 40 years of experience in structural engineering, with an extensive background in the design and renovation of a variety of structures. His diverse experience includes high rise structures in both steel and concrete framing systems, long span steel structures, stadium structures and renovations of existing structures.

The New York Chapter of the Concrete Industry Board, was founded in 1951 to serve as the focus of efforts in the New York Metropolitan area to achieve and ensure quality concrete. The organization’s Leader of Industry Awards are given annually to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the New York area construction industry and have played a key role in furthering the mission of the CIB.

Mr. Smilow has been responsible for structural designs for diverse building types, including office buildings, residential towers, hotels, educational institutions, hospitals, stadiums and transportation facilities. Some of the high profile projects in the New York area he has designed with include 55 Hudson Yards, the first fully cast in place concrete post tensioned high rise commercial tower in NYC, World Trade Center Tower 3, and City Field Stadium home of the NY Mets just to name a few of the many projects during his career. Mr. Smilow also played a prominent role in the investigation and study of building performance post the 9/11 attacks. In addition he served on a key committee responsible for re writing the NYC Building Code.

A licensed professional engineer in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida, Colorado, and Massachusetts, Mr. Smilow received MCE and BCE degrees from City College of New York. In addition to his involvement with the CIB, he is active in the American Society of Civil Engineers (Fellow), American Concrete Institute, American Institute of Steel Construction, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and the Structural Engineering Association of New York.
