WallGoldfinger: Curves, Angles, Mixed Materials Make for Engineering Triumph

From complex design to beautiful result: Hawaii project is head-turner

When a furniture project is headed to Hawaii, a surprising number of people suddenly fancy themselves furniture installers or liaisons.

While the WallGoldfinger team didn’t get to fulfill the sandy beach, palm tree dream, building the furniture that made the trip via air in carefully packed crates wasn’t too far off considering the beauty and complexity of the work.

Overall, the furniture designed by AECOM included a 43-foot curved table; two height-adjustable, oversized lecterns and two display cases.

The table in particular was an exercise in craftsmanship and complex geometry. The table is not only curved but slanted. In between sections of beautifully laid up and finished sustainable quartered sapele veneer are brushed stainless steel accents and supports. At the same time, brushed stainless runs horizontally along the curved kick and a wide indented inlay band near the table top. There is a riser with metal name plates, again curved and slanted, more of that beautiful sapele angling out from the base and down from the riser top. The curved tabletop surface is engineered quartz with a bullnose edge.

Technology includes fixture boxes, speakers with various controls and plug-ins and 12-inch gooseneck microphones with LED lights.

The lecterns are slanted as well and feature an automated lift for standing and sitting heights, that same gorgeous and sustainably harvested veneer, more brushed stainless steel and a custom logo on the front. Included for the user of the lecterns is also a fixture box, speaker and controls, lighting and a dimmer switch and the adjustable height lift control.

The display cases are standouts for their UV bonded, clear, low iron, tempered glass display cases (not shown) with lighting, granite kick plates and more of that sapele veneer.

The end result was some incredible furniture that was a labor of love. We were so taken with the project that we captured it from start to finish in photos and videos. See the making of this project here.
