TALK: Designing Better College Classrooms, Hosted by BuroHappold, May 22

Designed by KieranTimberlake and engineered by BuroHappold, the 80,000-square-foot Engineering Research Center at Brown University includes a high-tech nanotechnology lab with a clean room, an advanced imaging lab, and research and teaching laboratories.
Located in the historic School of Journalism at Columbia University, the 4,600-square-foot Brown Institute for Media and Innovation is a unique academic experiment devoted to the co-evolution of journalism and technology.

As new instructional tech and online learning upend university academics, how should classrooms and labs change in response? That’s the main topic at a May 22 panel discussion hosted by BuroHappold in New York City.

Moderated by The Chronicle of Higher Education editor Sara Lipka, a panel of multidisciplinary experts discuss how academic facilities and social spaces are radically mutating to reflect modern college needs. According to Tim Christ, AIA, a BuroHappold principal, “These practitioners and observers will share the latest ideas on catalysts for change in higher education, transformational design approaches, and lessons for future academic and instructional designs.”

An Exchange of Ideas: Shifting Paradigms for Academic Classrooms

A Panel on the Future of University Learning Environments

Hosted by BuroHappold

Higher education is in a state of flux. Emerging technologies and approaches to learning are upending norms of traditional knowledge transmission. Internet-based learning is continuing to increase while at the same time, campus architects are re-valuing social spaces as essential to the student experience. As a result, higher education leaders are looking into new ideas for university campus master plans, and rethinking and conceptualizing new academic buildings. As these initiatives and juxtapositions evolve, what will the academic building of the future look like? How will designers ensure classroom spaces are relevant — both now and in decades to come?

Join BuroHappold and a panel of experts on Wednesday, May 22, when we convene a panel of practitioners and observers including an architect, institutional advisor, university administrator and journalist to hear their thoughts on this critical topic. These experts, working at the cutting edge of the future of higher education, will discuss the catalysts for the changes, transformational design approaches, and lessons for future academic facility and instructional designs.
