The subscription-based business model adopted by giants like Adobe, Audible and Birchbox has finally reached the interior design and architecture fields thanks to a new offering by color technology and mobile application developer Variable, Inc.

Initially released in April as a color reference system for purchase, the mobile app Inspire™ and its accompanying sensor device chromaPro™ are now packaged under a subscription model to be an initial test release in the U.S. over the next couple months.

“We listened to our clients,” said Variable CEO and founder George Yu. “Designers wanted the power of our color system and the flexibility and economy of a monthly subscription.” He continued, “Our service has always been about partnering with professionals, and this model strengthens that two-way, ongoing conversation between the makers of a product and its users.”

As the inevitable next step in the Internet of Things (IoT), the subscription-based offering means interior designers can try the service without the huge financial commitment of most color sensor systems. Pre-loaded with most U.S. paint decks, the device and app allow designers to collect colors and inspiration, organize projects and ideas, and share those ideas with clients via smart device.

“Gone are the days of lugging around samples. For less than a modest cellphone bill, interior designers and architects can use the latest technology to streamline color selection process, improve efficiencies and utilize technology to bring full-color ideas directly to their clients,” said Variable VP of marketing John Kowalski. “We expect this service will truly revolutionize the way design professionals interact with their clients.”

chromaPro and the Inspire app work together as a design workflow team to collect color inspiration, reference against color libraries, create palettes, organize, share, and even order product or color samples. The Inspire app is a base and allows for unlimited customization based on the user’s objectives.

As part of the initial release, Variable offers individuals a no risk, 30-day trial of the chromaPro/Inspire app system. For those who already own a color sensor device, subscriptions are available at a lower rate.
