Second Nature, by Luum Textiles Receives 2021 Green Good Design Award

Second Nature celebrates nature’s ability to regenerate and challenges our perceptions of traditional floral patterns

In its 13th year, the Green GOOD DESIGN program identifies and emphasizes the world’s most important examples of sustainable design and generates awareness around which global companies are doing the best job with ecological and sustainable design for our world environments.

“We’re honored to receive this recognition for sustainable design,” said Suzanne Tick, Creative Director, Luum Textiles. “Renewable fibers create grounded, comforting surfaces and the optical phenomena within this pattern reflects the wonders of the natural world.”

Even though the smallest crack in the pavement, nature finds a way to breakthrough. As part of the Mutable Matter collection, Second Nature is the brand’s first contemporary floral pattern. With a botanical motif that emerges from an architectural stitched pattern, the collection expresses nature’s ability to regenerate and challenges our perceptions of traditional floral patterns.

Second Nature exemplifies the resiliency of nature, even though a human-made intervention. Focusing on the conditions of the design process, both the craft of weaving and embroidery, Second Nature explores the basic components of cloth—the torque of a yarn, fibers’ natural variegation, the rationality of the weave structure, and a scientific approach to color.

Second Nature uses an existing product in the Luum line, Construct. The embroidery gives Construct a new lease on design. Construct is an 80% wool and 20% nylon textile comprised of predominantly renewable fibers. Through collaboration with a trusted mill partner, all embroidering is completed domestically. By working closely with the mill, the company can optimize patterns and understand the machines to lower material waste. Using Construct, a wool-blend solid, as a base cloth, Second Nature’s linear stitching refers to the structure while transforming the surface of the fabric, inviting us to reimagine our relationship with the natural environment.
