Can school design help nurture and inspire students while also protecting them?
InfraGard San Diego, the FBI-affiliated nonprofit seeking to reduce criminal and terrorist threats, has invited Svigals+Partners’ Julia McFadden, AIA, an expert in K-12 school design and an architect of the new Sandy Hook School in Connecticut, to speak at their two events on February 14th in Poway and San Diego, Calif.
Joining her is a security leader from UC San Diego, Roberto Meza, an expert on crime prevention through environmental design, or CPTED. McFadden and Meza will discuss how educational buildings can help nurture students while inspiring learning and also reducing the likelihood of crimes and unwanted intrusions.

– Julia McFadden, AIA, Associate Principal at Svigals + Partners, the architectural firm that led the Sandy Hook and Newtown, CT community through the school design and rebuild process.

Wednesday, February 14
Session 1, Poway, Calif., 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Session 2, San Diego, 2:00 – 4:30pm
According to the National Institute of Crime Prevention, “Proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime and an improvement in the quality of life.” When looking at protecting our critical assets (children, employees, property), it is important to look beyond locks, alarms and security cameras.
– Roberto Meza of UC San Diego will provide basic strategies in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), a multi-disciplinary approach to crime prevention.
– Julia McFadden, AIA, will illustrate how the community of Sandy Hook used a comprehensive strategy to implement CPTED principles. Her architecture firm, Svigals + Partners, was selected to lead the Newtown, Connecticut community through the revitalization process and the design of a school which addressed deep security concerns through placing the educational mission as the primary goal. McFadden will discuss the process taken by the firm and how the new Sandy Hook school design creates a safe and orderly environment that nurtures children and inspires learning.
