Acclaimed New York–based firm Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) has announced the appointment of Bina Bhattacharyya to the firm’s partnership. Bina first joined RAMSA in 2003 and has been integral to growing RAMSA’s international footprint in the past decade, leading some of the firm’s most important and transformative international design projects.

Joining 16 other partners at RAMSA, Bina brings decades of experience working at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and landscape design. She will continue to lead projects ranging from private residences and residential communities to mixed-use planning and hospitality design.

“I am thrilled to be joining the partnership at RAMSA. Over the last two decades, the opportunity to grow our presence at home and abroad has been truly rewarding, and I have been fortunate to collaborate with incredible clients and talented colleagues on once-in-a-lifetime projects,” Bina says.

Bina has been a key figure in RAMSA’s international presence, designing sensitively conceived and artfully executed designs all over the world. Her design process is firmly rooted in rigorous research and analysis, which seeks to bring to life the client’s vision while also enriching the communities where she builds.

Notably, Bina was a key leader on the design of Heart of Lake, an award-winning and highly influential 200,000-square-meter garden suburb in Xiamen, China, that synthesizes classical traditions and regional vernacular to address climatic concerns. Bina also led the design of AVIC Uptown, an 825,000-square-meter mixed-use development in Jinjiang, China. In Hong Kong, the St. George’s Mansions residential tower will be a sensitive addition to the city’s Kadoorie Hill neighborhood once completed.

Other ongoing international projects include the design of a new ambassador’s residence in Africa for the United States Department of State, a seaside marina village and resort in Turkey, and a sustainability-minded, mixed-use community in Kazakhstan.

Committed to strengthening all facets of the architecture and planning professions, Bina is actively engaged in professional organizations including the Urban Design Forum, the Congress for New Urbanism, and the Urban Land Institute where she previously served as the Vice Chair of the ULI Americas Community Development Council, is an active member of the ULI New York Chapter Housing Council, and is part of the ULI Advisory Services team currently offering expertise in community design in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Bina is a co-founder, former chairperson, and current partner liaison of RAMSA’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance. Bina is also an active educator with a passion for mentoring young design thinkers, inside and outside the office. She has both taught and served as a guest critic at the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture. She has also been a guest critic at the Yale School of Architecture and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, as well as a guest critic for urban planning studios at Columbia University. Recently, she was a juror for the 20th annual ULI Hines Student Competition.

“I’m honored to join the remarkable 16 other partners at RAMSA and build upon our firm’s legacy—over the years they offered me invaluable guidance and mentorship,” Bina says. “I see this new leadership position as an opportunity to pay it forward and continue mentoring the next generation of architects and urbanists, while still helping to shape the firm’s future in the years ahead.”
