The IIDA Interior Design Competition recognizes outstanding, innovative interior design/interior architecture projects that encourage new ideas and techniques in the design and furnishings of interior spaces. The Best of Competition winner was announced on Sunday, June 12 at COOL, the annual IIDA black-tie gala, which celebrates design excellence.

“For more than 40 years, the IIDA Interior Design Competition has recognized the highest level of design achievement from firms whose innovation and creative execution pushes the boundaries of what interior environments can achieve,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP. “The Newell Rubbermaid Design Center, designed by Perkins+Will, illustrates the evolution to a less formal workplace while maintaining a level of sophistication and professionalism, engaging employees with spaces that inspire the imagination and facilitate collaboration.”

The esteemed jury panel for the competition included Mari Balestrazzi (Vice President, Design Services, Hyatt Hotels Corporation); Anne Cunningham, IIDA, Assoc. AIA (Principal, Interior Design Practice Leader, NBBJ Architects); and Scott Hierlinger, FIIDA, LEED AP (Design Director, Nelson).

“Perkins+Will succeeded in designing a creative work environment that supports the product development of the company, creates a sense of place, and honors the legacy of craftsmanship in the region. The design of the Newell Rubbermaid Design Center is restrained and beautiful, exemplifying the ethos that less is truly more,” said Hierlinger, on behalf of the jury.
