ABOUT THE TOUR
There is a new icon coming to the New York skyline and it will be located in what some call the “forgotten borough.” St. George, at the northern tip of Staten Island, is in the midst of a $1.2 billion redevelopment effort over the next two year. At the center of this transformation is The New York Wheel, which will be the world’s tallest observation wheel—at 630 feet tall—upon its opening in 2018. Riders will experience a completely new vantage point in NYC, where beyond New York Harbor visitors can take in a panorama of Jersey City, Lower Manhattan, the Verrazano Bridge and more. As part of this monumental development, the Wheel’s site will feature a new Terminal building for ticketing, dining, exhibitions and other activities; a playground; walking paths; outdoor dining; and five acres of publicly accessible green space, including a 184,000 sf green roof atop the parking garage.
Led by Richard Marin– CEO of The New York Wheel– Navid Maqami AIA, LEED AP– Design Principal for the project and Founding Partner of S9 Architecture– and Jonathan Cohn AIA, LEED AP– Project Manager for The New York Wheel and Principal with Perkins Eastman– these Open Dialogue tours will take visitors behind the scenes and discuss in detail this milestone design and engineering project that is reshaping Staten Island’s north waterfront into a world-class destination, and is set to become one of NYC’s most sought after attractions.
The New York Wheel will transform the future of tourism and economic development on Staten Island’s North Shore. The Wheel will soon be a hub of shopping, dining, culture and entertainment. The neighborhood is already home to landmarks including Snug Harbor Cultural Center, the St. George Theatre and the Richmond County Ballpark, home to the Staten Island Yankees.
