Senior medical planner and business development strategist joins firm’s renowned healthcare practice

Michael Hess has joined as Principal in the New York studio of global architecture and design firm Perkins Eastman. With 31 years of professional expertise, Hess is a proven leader in healthcare program development with an impressive portfolio of design and planning work spanning across the United States, Asia, and the Middle East. His deep understanding of strategic design practices in healthcare and several other key practice areas, as well as his demonstrated global experience, make him an invaluable asset to the firm.

After earning a Bachelor of Architecture and a CED in Urban Planning and Design from The Ohio State University, Hess dove into the world of healthcare design, holding leadership positions at several international design firms. An innovator, Hess is known for his expert ability to lead and successfully navigate complicated, high-quality projects from start to finish. He has effectively managed the strategic development, master planning, and design of healthcare facilities both domestic and international for highly-respected clients. His knack for seamlessly collaborating with hospital staff, consultant teams, physicians, and every member of the project team is critical to the success of every project he touches, as his impressive record shows. Select key international and domestic clients include the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS), Thonburi Hospital Group, Parkway Hospitals Singapore, Raffles Medical Group, Singapore Ministry of Health, and Oxford University Ministry of Health, among others.

In addition to his design work, Hess is a prolific speaker who has presented at conferences around the world. His past speaking engagements include the Healthcare Facilities Asia Annual Conference, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) US/Hanoi Vietnam Panel, Singapore Ministry of Health, Global Health Congress, Hospital Build Asia, and Hospital Build Middle East. This September, he will be representing Perkins Eastman at the 2022 U.S. Department of Commerce Healthcare Trade Mission to Southeast Asia. With a clear-cut commitment to his clients and the industry, he has earned certifications from the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) and Lean Management Institute (LMI).

“Michael’s wealth of experience speaks for itself, and we’re confident he’ll add great value not only to our healthcare practice, but to the firm at large,” says Shawn Basler, AIA, co-CEO and executive director of Perkins Eastman. “Keeping the human in ‘Human by Design’ is at the core of everything we do, and we know that philosophy resonates with Michael, as evident by his patient-centric work. We’re thrilled to have him onboard.”

“Perkins Eastman is a globally-recognized firm that is an established leader in healthcare design, among many other practice areas,” echoes Hess. “It’s a wonderful opportunity and an honor to join this team and work alongside such incredible talent.”
