Novità’s Must-See Activations during NYCxDESIGN’s 10th Anniversary Festival

NYCxDESIGN starts this week with its 10th Anniversary Festival from May 10-20, 2022. In honor of this special milestone, the hundreds of events this year will highlight creatives and visionaries who have been at the core of remaking, reimagining, and positively impacting New York’s expansive design community over the last decade. Novità is excited to be involved in much of the programming, including exhibits at ICFF and WantedDesign Manhattan, interactive installations, showroom openings, film screenings, virtual panels, and more.

AROUND TOWN

Design Pavilion Returns on May 7 – 15

New York City’s premier public design exhibition, Design Pavilion, will return for its 5th edition on May 7 – 15 as part of NYCxDESIGN. The internationally acclaimed 9-day event celebrates creativity and sustainability by offering inspiring interactive installations by leading architects and designers in Times Square and beyond.Two inspiring installations on view are FILTER and Pratt’s Pop Up/Drop Off. A 20-foot-tall steel ellipsoid pavilion in Times Square, FILTER, was thoughtfully designed by CLB Architects to create a place of contemplation removed from the chaos of city noise and everyday life. Developed by a team of Pratt undergraduate architecture students, Pratt’s Pop Up/Drop Off is an inflatable structure created to investigate design activism around plastic waste, available to view on West 46th St. and 7th Ave.

IMPACTxDESIGN

During the Festival, NYCxDESIGN will unveil the winning design installations from its inaugural competition, IMPACTxDESIGN, in partnership with Caesarstone. Designers Karim Rashid and Kickie Chudikova developed compelling concepts for Dumbo Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan, showcasing how dynamic design can foster engagement and enhance public space, one of the city’s most valuable resources. The two structures will be on view through Winter 2023.

Open Studio Crawls by NYCxDESIGN

NYCxDESIGN’s Open Studio Crawls offer a behind-the-scenes look at the city’s design scene across its most creative neighborhoods. NYCxDESIGN will host guided walking tours in Red HookLong Island City, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and Flatiron during the Festival on four dedicated days.

The Responsibility of Design: A Talk Series of NYC design luminaries led by Laura Kohler, Kohler Co. and Debbie Millman

On May 13, NYCxDESIGN will bring its podcast The Mic to a live audience for the first time at the Kohler Experience Center by Best Plumbing Supply. Host Debbie Millman will be joined by Laura Kohler, Senior Vice President – HR, Stewardship & Sustainability at Kohler Co., for “The Responsibility of Design,” a series of striking conversations with design luminaries Claire Weisz, Suchi Reddy, and Michael Chen.

DRINKSxDESIGN

Partnering with Eater and Punch, NYCxDESIGN will present DRINKSxDESIGN, a program that expands the Festival’s design footprint to support New York City’s dynamic culinary scene. DRINKSxDESIGN will feature a select group of design-centric restaurants and bars offering bespoke cocktails served exclusively during The Festival, including King’s County Distillery, Bar Blondeau, Dear Irving on Hudson, Comodo, As Your Are, Llama San, Turk’s Inn, and Dear Irving Gramercy.

The Opening of Rimadesio’s First NYC Flagship Store

Beloved Italian furniture company Rimadesio is kicking off the opening of its first NYC showroom on May 11 with a media preview at 5 PM, followed by a celebratory party. Featuring its award-winning products – including the debut of their Maxi sliding doors and iconic Modulor Wood paneling system – the media preview will also host key Rimadesio leadership, including CEO Davide Malberti and US CEO Andrea Romano. Come celebrate the opening of Rimadesio’s first NYC flagship store at 102 Madison Ave!

ADFF Presents Films and Conversationson Public Art at Industry City

The Architecture & Design Film Festival will be hosting a panel discussion on public art with architect Suchi Reddy of Reddymade Architecture and artists Katie Merz and Evan Lovett, followed by outdoor film screenings of High Maintenance – The Life and Work of Dani Karavan and Small Town Big Canvas: An Indiana, PA Story on May 12 at 8:15 PM at Industry City. Attendees will be able to purchase food and drinks and comfortably experience the event – sponsored by Casper and Eventscape – while sitting on Casper mattresses and pillows. Attendees will also have access to other talks and exhibitions as part of the Industry City Design Festival Opening Night. Tickets can be purchased here.

Design Documentary MAU Comesto the Angelika Film Center

MAU, the first-ever feature-length documentary about design powerhouse Bruce Mau, will open at the Angelika Film Center beginning May 13. Written and directed by Benji and Jono Bergmann, the film explores Mau’s unlikely creative journey and ever-optimistic push to tackle the world’s biggest problems with design, featuring revealing conversations with Paola Antonelli, Bjarke Ingels, and Rem Koolhaas. To celebrate the opening, Bjarke Ingels will lead a talk with Bruce and his wife and business partner, Bisi Williams, and the filmmakers directly following the 7:30 PM showing on May 13. STACK by Timbur Public Days

Presented by Tuleste Factory, STACK by Timbur will feature new works that explore the possibilities of digital fabrication in furniture making. Press are welcome to preview this raw yet refined line of contemporary furniture and accessories on Monday, May 16 from 9 AM – 12 PM at Tuleste Factory (191 7th Ave, #2R, NY, NY 10011), with public days spanning from May 17 – 22 in the Beige room. From sculptural consoles and sleek seating to convex mirrors and unique tabletop objects, see how Timbur’s signature stack lamination process is putting a new perspective on product design.

ICFF/ WANTEDDESIGN MANHATTAN

Duravit @ ICFF

Duravit is thrilled to be back in New York in person at ICFF 2022. The brand will have an impressive showcase in booth #627 throughout the show, May 15 – 17 at the Javits Center. Exhibiting a variety of ceramic, furniture, wellness and smart-technology fixtures, the brand’s newest collections from Bertrand Lejoly (D-Neo) and Philippe Starck (White Tulip and SensoWash Starck f) will be particular highlights.

Turf @ WantedDesign Manhattan

At WantedDesign Manhattan 2022, Chicago-based Turf Design will exhibit its latest acoustic solutions, from ceiling baffles and tiles to screens and wall products. Turf will also show its newest product: Tremella, a two-layered acoustic solution that forms a playful cluster of sound absorption.
