Norbert Schachtner Joins HDR as Director for Education, Science, and Tech Markets in Germany

HDR is pleased to welcome Norbert Schachtner as director for education, science and tech markets in Germany. An architect with more than 25 years experience, Schachtner is based in the Munich office.

Schachtner comes to HDR from HENN, an architectural design firm in Europe, where he spent the past two decades helping to expand the firm’s Science and Health Care practice. He brings deep knowledge of complex building typologies and a propensity for exemplary design to this role.  Included in Schachtner’s portfolio are projects diverse in both scale and size, ranging from small laboratories to complicated Biosafety Level 4 facilities.

Schachtner will help HDR continue to expand its presence in the education, science and tech markets throughout Germany and Europe. He will work with colleagues across HDR’s worldwide offices to continue to build on the firm’s recent success in the region, which includes the nearly completed construction of the Helmholtz Diabetes Center in Munich and first prize in the competition for University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf, Research Campus.

“I am excited to help HDR bring its global expertise in science buildings to clients in Germany and Europe,” Schachtner said. “While the firm may be known best in Germany for its healthcare design expertise, HDR also has tremendous experience in designing award-winning education and science projects around the world, including Canada, the Middle East, Australia, China and the United States. I am excited to build the connections that will allow us to apply our proficiency as we design solutions that exceed our clients’ expectations.”

“We are truly honored that Norbert has joined HDR to drive our business-building in Germany and beyond,” said Steve Riojas, global director of HDR’s education, science and tech markets. “He brings such an impressive balance of complex facility programming and planning expertise, design sensitivity, and business acumen to the firm. Norbert will certainly be an invaluable partner for our clients across the region.”
