Nook, the first furniture manufacturer named a Certified Autism Resource (CAR), has received recertification by IBCCES, which remains valid through September 2027. The recertification represents Nook’s continuing commitment to making spaces more welcoming for everyone, including those who may need additional support in public environments.
Nook was initially certified in 2020, the first furniture maker to be named a Certified Autism Resource. IBCCES, an independent credentialing and certification board with a focus on cognitive disorders, is the accrediting body for the Certified Autism Resource (CAR) program.
As a part of the CAR application process, an IBCCES board of experts conducts a review to determine how a product or tool is aligned with one or more of its six areas of competency and, ultimately, how it meets the needs of individuals with autism. The goal is to promote Certified Autism Resource partners to its network of therapists, educators and parents to ensure they have the knowledge and access to products and services they need to improve the lives of individuals on the spectrum.
“Our mission to create spaces that are comfortable and inviting for everyone – and we mean everyone – continues,” said Nook’s Stewart Brown. “When we hear stories about what Nook means to individuals on the spectrum and how Nook helps create inclusive spaces, we know we are on the right track. We look forward to seeing where our mission takes us next.”
Though Nook was the first furniture maker to receive the CAR designation, the company is pleased to see other manufacturers following its path and taking the steps necessary for certification and demonstrating their commitment to inclusive spaces.
Nooks continue to make a difference for individuals on the spectrum in schools, libraries, offices, stadiums, art galleries, museums, hotels, hospitals and many other places where people gather and need space to unwind.
