Announcing the latest additions to Carl Hansen & Søn’s collection of classic furniture by renowned designer Børge Mogensen: the BM0057 Sideboard and the BM0489 Table Bench in paper cord.
Originally designed in 1957, the BM0057 Sideboard epitomizes timeless elegance with its exquisite joinery and adaptable design. Crafted from FSC-certified oak, it features two adjustable shelves and drawers, making it a versatile piece for any home. The BM0057 Sideboard will be available in stores from September 2024.
Building on the success of the BM0489 Table Bench, which was relaunched in 2020 with a rattan finish, the brand is now introducing a new variant in paper cord. Available in both long and short versions, this versatile bench can complement other furniture or stand alone in spaces such as hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms. The BM0489 Table Bench is available in stores now and can also be purchased online through 2Modern and Lumens.

CARL HANSEN & SØN PRESENTS THE BM0057 SIDEBOARD
BEAUTIFUL JOINERY AND UNASSUMING AESTHETICS COME TOGETHER IN BØRGE MOGENSEN’S SIDEBOARD, DESIGNED IN 1957.
Classic furniture designed by Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) has been part of Carl Hansen & Søn’s collection since 2018. Now, the company is expanding its collection to include Mogensen’s sideboard, the BM0057, from 1957. The sideboard stands out for its exclusive cabinetmaking in oak and brass; however, Børge Mogensen aimed to avoid an overly portentous style. He achieved this balance by letting the materials speak for themselves without unnecessary decoration, focusing instead on adding several functional details.
MASTER OF FUNCTIONALITY
Børge Mogensen strived to design furniture that was adapted to everyday life. He designed the sideboard with enough space for a complete 12-piece dinner set, and he ensured that the design enabled multiple sideboards to be combined together into a single larger sideboard.
Additionally, Børge Mogensen wanted the screws’ slots to point towards the center of the brass fittings to form a symmetrical pattern along a functional necessity. The sideboard contains two adjustable shelves and two drawers. The drawers feature beautiful joinery details such as mortise joints and side panels tapered towards the top to appear slim but remain stable at the same time.
The sideboard is a complicated piece of cabinetmaking that is mastered by only the most skilled cabinetmakers at Carl Hansen & Søn’s factory in Gelsted, Denmark. The sideboard is assembled by hand and requires an exacting customization process due to its tenon-and-beveled joints, double brackets and doors, in order to be beautiful from every angle – even from behind.

The Table Bench was presented as part of Børge Mogensen’s ‘building furniture concept’, where his philosophy was to design multifunctional and durable furniture that suits changing interior design needs. Carl Hansen & Søn relaunched the Table Bench in 2020 in rattan and is now adding a new paper cord variant to the collection. The Table Bench is available in a long and short version, both of which can be combined with other pieces in the collection to build a longer bench, or function as independent pieces of furniture in the hallway, as a sideboard in the living room or as a bedside table.
Børge Mogensen was known for his love and appreciation of good cabinetmaking, and he experimented with both materials and shapes to optimize the functionality of the furniture without compromising on quality or craftsmanship. The design idiom of the Table Bench is characterized by the solid oak, which is softened by the rounded edges and exposed mortise and tenon joints that lend an air of understated elegance.
It takes an experienced craftsman six hours to weave the 335 metres of paper cord using a double-plane weaving technique to create a finished Table Bench. Paper cord is a natural and durable material that Carl Hansen & Søn has extensive experience with, as it has been used throughout the company’s collection since 1950. Additionally, the material patinates beautifully over time, and does not need to be maintained in any way.
