Hella Jongerius continues her exploration of material and process with two new textiles in collaboration with the Maharam Design Studio.
Both Spindle and Washi were developed from the Dutch designer’s research for Woven Cosmos, her 2021 museum exhibition at Berlin’s Gropius Bau.
Washi references Jongerius’s handmade collages of colored film, using intricate blending techniques across both light and dark warps to convey the delicacy and dimensionality of their translucent layers.
To celebrate the universal role of spinning and weaving in cultures worldwide, Jongerius made a series of elaborate handmade ropes which the Maharam Design Studio captured in meticulous detail as ten individual motifs. Domestically woven on a jacquard loom, Spindle references Jongerius’s earlier experiments in embroidery techniques at industrial scale.
