New from Maharam: Impasto by Sonnhild Kestler

Impasto by Sonnhild Kestler, a hand-knotted wool rug, is the latest addition to Maharam’s ongoing collaboration with the Zürich-based designer.

Distilling a range of folkloric and traditional motifs into an idiosyncratic vocabulary of shape and color, Kestler’s distinct pattern language, which often begins with handmade cutouts transferred to silk screen, has guided the design studio’s translation of her collage compositions into woven textiles including Amulet, Mela, Monsoon, Mandala, and Zenith.

Impasto’s tactile surface builds on Kestler’s explorations in silk screen with a playful stripe that reproduces the look of wet ink scraped across a printing screen.

Three Maharam Stories examine Kestler’s unique references: In Conversation: Sonnhild Kestler; The Revival of Pattern, Symbolism, and Craft; and Of Dwarfs and Giants.
