New David Rockwell Products at BDNY

This fall at BDNY, Rockwell Group will be launching several exciting new product collections—including chairs and surface coverings.

For our successful Valet by David Rockwell collection of furniture for Stellar Works, that launched in Milan last spring, we are introducing side and arm chairs that can be used for dining, entertaining or working. The blackened steel legs will support a simple, curved wood seat that will be available in a range of upholstery or in molded plywood finishes.

We’re celebrating our 10-year relationship with Maya Romanoff with Cozy by David Rockwell. Cozy reimagines two of our previous collections Blanket and Stitched by taking Blanket’s fine wool felt and layering it with an engraved and printed stitching pattern printed in metallic foil, resulting in a wall covering that plays with texture and light.

Finally, we are launching our fourth collection of sustainable carpets for Shaw Hospitality Group. Ethereal Beauty is a continuation of our exploration of soft, tonal textures based on patterns found in plant life and botanical specimens.

Side Chair and Arm Chair
Valet Collection by David Rockwell for Stellar Works

Project Type: Product Design

Use: Hospitality and Residential

Launch: November 13-14, 2016, Boutique Design Trade Fair, Jacob K. Javits Center, NYC

Background: We launched Valet by David Rockwell, our first collection for Stellar Works, at Salone del Mobile in April 2016. The original 14-piece collection explores a new furniture typology that supports the way we live today. With tactile and refined materials and details, including full-grain saddle leather, American walnut, black steel, and brushed brass, each piece redefines the essentials of modern living, working, and entertaining

We took inspiration for the collection, part of Stellar Works’ Collaboration series, from the roots of the word “valet,” but reinterpreted it for the 21st Century. This crafted, unique furniture accommodates the narrative of our lives today; people want fewer objects, but ones that combine functions making our lives easier and meaningful.

This fall we are adding two new chairs to the collection that fit seamlessly into the Valet family, but also broaden the collection’s reach for the hospitality and contract environments.

rockwell-group-valet2Design Details: Our new Side Chair and Arm Chair have a sleek, simple, neutral profile—a modernized, updated version of a timeless classic, the school chair. With bent, blackened steel legs and a simple, curved wood seat and back, the chair comes with armrests (Arm) or without (Side), making it especially suited for restaurant dining, but also adaptable to numerous settings, from writing desks to lounges and work spaces.

In a range of upholstery or molded plywood finishes, the chairs are well-designed, and comfortable—with elegance in service of adaptability. Using the same material language as the rest of the Valet collection, we gave the chairs luxurious embellishments, from saddle leather cord-wrapped armrests, matte brass hardware, and brass stretchers (Arm). These elements also make the chairs a natural in a multitude of hospitality settings.

Valet’s combination of refined forms, tactile materials, fine craftsmanship, and multifunctional designs make these furniture pieces well suited for hotel guestrooms, as well. The pieces provide luxury and comfort, and allow guests to arrange their environments to make them feel a bit more like home. The materials that we used for Valet—blackened steel, brass, bronze, wood, full-grain saddle leather—are ones that we love for their expressive quality and sense of craft. Mixing metals in the pieces provides visual contrast, while also making the pieces strong and lightweight.

rockwell-group-ethereal-beauty2Description: Ethereal Beauty, Rockwell Group’s fourth collection for Shaw Hospitality Group, continues our exploration of soft, tonal textures based on patterns found in nature, specifically plant life and botanical specimens. Focusing on dreams and the subconscious, nature is viewed through the lens of the mystical and surreal. Ambiguity is the subject matter.

Curious about the atmospheric and ethereal qualities that nature presents to us, we were motivated by artists and artistic representations to try techniques such as scans, watercolor, monoprints, cyanoprint, montage, and x-rays. Playing with light and scale, and with defined and blurred lines, we created different patterns that draw inspiration from Henri Rousseau, the photographs of Karl Blossfeldt, Ernst Haeckel’s nature illustrations, and Chinese landscape paintings.

Images of leaves, flowers, and natural phenomena are layered to create dream-like montages that are both familiar and otherworldly. In order to accomplish the dream-like moods, we found ferns from the park across the street and blooms from New York City’s flower district and manipulated them, either with digital techniques or vintage ones, such as blueprint paper.

Pushing the boundaries of ColorPoint technology and a mix of cut and loop styles, we added layers of depth and plush texture in order to create an atmospheric, ethereal look and feel that is unexpected and unique. Ethereal Beauty’s natural palette and luxe textures are also translated into carpet tile format, bringing another level of stylization and expression to the collection.
