NELSON Chicago Receives Mystic Award at IIDA Stitch

Each year, the IIDA Chicago Chapter hosts Stitch, a design competition and charity event that brings together local designers with sponsors to create fashionable looks out of unconventional materials (think the Mychael Knight coffee filter dress from Project Runway 2006). NELSON Chicago is no stranger to the event. This year, the theme was “One Hit Wonders, Pop Culture Phenomena,” and as always, NELSON was up for the challenge. Partnering with Atlas Carpet, the team (see below for names!) decided to create a “Liger” from the hit 2004 movie, Napoleon Dynamite.

Haven’t seen Napoleon Dynamite? Confused by what a liger is? For those of you who weren’t constantly quoting this one hit wonder in the early 2000s, a liger is like a lion and a tiger mixed…bred for its skills in magic. Anyways, enough with the zoology lessons.

Whether pocketing tots, hunting wolverines, or sketching fantastical creatures, Napoleon always did, “Whatever I feel like I wanna do, gosh!” Encapsulating the imagination across the nation, the effortlessly quotable Napoleon won “Votes for Pedro” every time. Napoleon and his favorite Liger also won the judges’ hearts by swaying to the music in this yarn creation of dreams and dance. After weeks of preparation, the team received the Mystic Award for Best Concept to Creation.

Congratulations to the Chicago Teammates who spent countless hours outside of the job to complete this award winning concept!
