Mohawk First to Issue Commercial Flooring Health Product Declaration® in HPD Open Standard Version 2.0

Mohawk Group, a leading commercial flooring company known for cutting-edge and innovative flooring solutions, announced today that the company has issued the industry’s first publicly disclosed Health Product Declaration® (HPD)s under the new HPD Open Standard Version 2.0. for EcoFlex™ NXT modular commercial floor covering and EcoFlex NXT Air tufted modular cushion tiles. These are the first of several HPDs that will be issued by Mohawk under the new Version 2.0 standard.

The HPD Open Standard was developed and is maintained by the HPD Collaborative, a non-profit, customer-led organization committed to the continuous improvement of the building industry’s environmental and health performance, through transparency and innovation in the building product supply chain. The HPD is an open standard that establishes a standard methodology and specification for reporting and disclosing information about the ingredients in a building product and their associated health information.

“We are excited to be the very first in the flooring industry to issue and publicly disclose two new HPDs under the HPD Open Standard Version 2.0, demonstrating our support of the HPD Collaborative and our mutual vision of transparency in building products. These new HPDs will take the place of the HPDs that Mohawk issued under the original HPD 1.0 open standard. With the implementation of LEED® v4, it is more important than ever before to provide our customers with complete, transparent ingredients information of our products, and the potential health impacts of the ingredients themselves,” said Rochelle Routman, vice president of sustainability, Mohawk Flooring. “We encourage all manufacturers of building products to embrace transparency, which is a necessary prerequisite for informed decisions related to the selection of appropriate materials for building projects. HPDs establish a common framework and language that Mohawk and other building product manufacturers can use to communicate ingredients and health information, which ensures accurate and consistent reporting.”

Mohawk Group’s new HPDs for both EcoFlex™ NXT modular commercial floor covering and EcoFlex NXT Air tufted cushion modular tiles includes the product ingredients, product descriptions, and recycled content.

“We’re delighted that Mohawk is leading the way among flooring manufacturers by issuing an HPD through our new HPD Builder 2.0 platform,” said Wendy Vittori, executive director of the Health Product Declaration Collaborative. “As Visionary Sponsors of the HPD Collaborative, Mohawk has long provided valuable support for our efforts to create a common disclosure language, streamline the reporting process for manufacturers and continue to provide the HPD Open Standard freely to the public, all with the shared goal of creating a healthier built environment.”

Mohawk Group has an extensive transparency portfolio, including HPDs, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Declare Labels. These initiatives are essential for helping architects, designers and end users make the right choice when specifying products that contribute to a healthy environment over their life cycle. The U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has also incorporated HPDs and EPDs into LEED V4, its most recent version of the popular LEED standard.

The EcoFlex™ NXT is a high-performance, red list free commercial modular floorcovering that consists of various styles, colors and patterns made with a nylon pile fiber layer and EcoFlex NXT recycled content backing. EcoFlex NXT Air tufted cushion modular tiles contain a post-consumer recycled content cushion back. For more information, visit MohawkGroup.com.
