Mark Richey Woodworking: One eye-catching atrium

This multi-story core and shell atrium in Cambridge, Mass., designed by NBBJ features numerous unique planters, stairways and stunning ceiling features.

Fabricated by Mark Richey Woodworking in collaboration with general contractor Moriarty, planters are rift cut white oak veneer with a white matte finish, mostly triangular shapes, and carefully integrated to scale walls and stairways. There are more than 200 individual planters in total.

Stairways feature the same whitewashed rift oak veneer in flat wall paneling as well as faceted stair and balcony side and bottom panels with reveals that align and wrap around the stairs.

Ceilings in the atrium below stairways are rift cut white oak diamond shapes in a light stain with integrated lighting, heating and ventilation, and sprinklers. Other areas feature casework, acoustic ceilings with white aluminum powder coated framing, oak slat walls and ceilings, and oak plank interior and exterior ceilings or soffits.
