Cosonas’ unique approach to design will build upon Luum’s successful portfolio and broaden the brand’s reach.
One of the most renowned textile designers of her time, Dorothy Cosonas joins Luum Textiles as its new Creative Director. Since its formal introduction in 2016, under the Creative Direction of Suzanne Tick, Luum Textiles has become an established leader in the contract textiles market and beyond, having won Interior Design’s Best of Year Award for Best Contract Textiles in 2023 & 2024, among others. With her retirement in 2024, Suzanne Tick now passes the torch to Dorothy Cosonas who seeks to build upon Luum’s strong foundation, continuing to broaden and evolve the Luum brand.
Working alongside the Creative team at Luum’s New York City studio, Cosonas will lead product development – carrying on Luum’s legacy of fiber development, material innovation, and seeking out sustainable technologies. Cosonas will infuse her timeless design approach to color, patterns and textures to further broaden Luum’s presence in the workplace, lifestyle/hospitality, wellness and education markets. She will also be responsible for steering the company’s creative vision alongside President, Dave White and the marketing team.
Dorothy Cosonas developed an interest in design at a young age. Her passions led her to pursue degrees in both fine arts and textile design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. Her work is highly influenced by her passion for fine art and the world of fashion. Devoted to modern design, Dorothy is known for combining clean, clear color with elegant patterns and textures.
While still in school, Dorothy interned at the contract textile company Unika Vaev, lead by the distinguished textile designer Sina Pearson. Under Pearson’s guidance, she began to develop her own unique design point of view. In 1994 became the company’s Director of Design, and held roles there for 21 years.
In 2005, Dorothy was named the 11th Creative Director of KnollTextiles. Her inaugural collection won a Best of NeoCon Gold – her first in a long line of awards. Following the tradition of Florence Knoll, Cosonas also worked with outside artists and designers such as Abbott Miller, Irma Boom, Calico and Nick Cave. In 2008 she founded Knoll Luxe as the fashion-forward component of KnollTextiles where she contributed her designs and collaborated with American fashion designers such as Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, and Maria Cornejo.
Over 16 years at KnollTextiles, Dorothy was responsible for the design and development of all collections, becoming the longest serving – and the final- Creative Director, coinciding with the 2021 merger of MillerKnoll.
“Respectful of the acclaimed legacy created by Suzanne Tick, I look forward to writing this next chapter with the Luum team in shaping its future visual identity by expanding the language of design with a distinct point of view,” says Dorothy Cosonas, Creative Director at Luum Textiles. “These products should not only work on their own, but integrate easily with Luum’s existing portfolio.”
On behalf of Luum Textiles, please join us in warmly welcoming Dorothy to the team!
About Luum Textiles:
Making an impression without leaving a footprint, Luum Textiles was founded in 2013 on the belief that sustainable textile design is most successful when the creative process is paired with a clear performance intent. Working by hand at the fiber level, Luum is able to understand – and ultimately influence – how luxury performance materials will perform in workplace, lifestyle, hospitality, wellness and higher education settings. Luum’s textiles serve as integrated collections designed to deliver an integrated experience for architects and designers, for a complete interior solution.
