Louis Poulsen AJ Lamp – 60th Anniversary of the SAS Royal Hotel

In 1960. Arne Jacobsen’s iconic SAS Royal Hotel opened in Copenhagen, providing the city with its first real high-rise. Jacobsen designed the AJ lamp for the hotel and today it is one of his most iconic designs. In Spring 2020, for the 60th Anniversary of the hotel, Louis Poulsen is re-launching several additions to the AJ family.

Arne Jacobsen originally designed AJ Royal, which at the time was simply called the AJ Pendant, for the hotel. It could be found above the tables in the snack bar, behind the atrium in the lounge on the 1st floor, and in the Panorama Lounge on the 21st floor. Louis Poulsen is re-introducing the AJ Royal pendant lamp in honor of the 60th Anniversary. Available in three sizes in black and white, the AJ Royal retains its classic, graphic look whether it is lighting up a dining table, used in an office, or displayed in a showroom. Its design ensures even and flawless downward lighting, and its muted upward light provides a pleasant ambiance in any space.

The iconic AJ Lamp that was designed specifically for the hotel was originally in a stainless-steel colorway throughout the space. All versions of the AJ Lamp are being re-launched in stainless steel, which reflects their surroundings, emphasizes their minimalist and distinctive shape and design, and accentuates their impeccable illumination. The collection includes a table lamp, mini table lamp, floor lamp, and wall lamp. The lighting design and colorway remain as timeless today as they were 60 years ago.

The original AJ Table Lamp designed for the hotel was developed in a smaller size than the current table lamp version. To commemorate the anniversary, Louis Poulsen is re-introducing the AJ Mini Table Lamp in the original size Jacobsen created for the hotel. This new mini size joins the collection in all 14 available colorways.

Lastly, Louis Poulsen will also release three new special edition colors that will only be available in 2020; Original Gray, Pale Rose, and Ultra Blue. The limited-edition colors will be available in table lamp, mini table lamp, floor lamp, and wall lamp styles. These special colors speak to the trends of today, from Millennial Pink to Pantone’s blue color of the year, in an iconic and timeless form.
