Lauren Rottet, FAIA, FIIDA, internationally celebrated architect, designer and founding principal/president and owner of Rottet Studio as well as her eponymous Rottet Collection, has been honored with the Chicago Athenaeum GOOD DESIGNŽ Award for her 2023 Series of furniture, including (shown above from left to right) the Montauk Float Chair, New Canaan Lounge Chair, Willow Table, Comice Chair, and the Coco Float and Karl Float chairs.

“These pieces were envisioned to create an emotional response so I’m thrilled the judges were moved enough by their individuality to recognize the series for its unique design,” said Rottet. “I want to thank the esteemed jury and congratulate all of my fellow awardees for their endless pursuit of pushing the envelope of design.”

Now in its 73rd year, the GOOD DESIGN Awards recognize top-tier, cutting-edge design, bestowed annually by the Chicago Athenaeum in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. Founded in Chicago in 1950, GOOD DESIGN is the oldest and most respected program awarding design excellence worldwide. In 2023, the Museum received a record number of submissions from an international roster of top manufacturers and industrial, product and graphic design firms representing 55 nations.

The six designs emphasize Rottet’s versatility utilizing various materials that combine visual movement through the manipulation of light and forms. While the Montauk Float Chair with acrylic base is inspired by Rottet’s George Nelson-designed home on Long Island, the acrylic-and-steel New Canaan Lounge Chair pays homage to the iconic Glass House. The Willow Table’s construction was invented as a response to the flexible nature of the namesake, while the fur-cushioned, pear-shaped wood Comice Chair is a study in elegant proportions.  Lastly, the Coco Float and Karl Float chairs with transparent seats and backs present the illusion of floating in air.
