From responsible wood procurement to waste reduction at all our facilities, Kimball International’s commitment to sustainability is a core tenet that drives our decisions and shapes our growth. Throughout April, in honor of Earth Day, we joined together as a community to demonstrate that commitment and take action in a variety of ways to preserve our planet and reduce our communities’ environmental impact.
Last week, we announced the culmination of our month-long partnership with American Forests to support the American ReLeaf program. Through the program, American Forests conserves and restores forests across North America, planting 65 million trees in the last three decades. With the help of contributions from our employees, partners and customers, and a donation from the Kimball International-Habig Foundation, we achieved our goal to raise $20,000 to plant 20,000 trees in fire- stricken forests across the United States.
“Protecting our natural resources and utilizing environmentally responsible business practices have long been key components of our corporate purpose,” said Lonnie Nicholson, Chair of the Kimball International-Habig Foundation and Kimball International’s Chief Human Resources Officer. “This investment in reforestation efforts is fitting, given our company’s roots in wood craftsmanship, and its growth into an industry leader at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing practices.”
Also in April, Kimball International partnered locally with the Dubois County Solid Waste Management District to boost recycling efforts with a successful one-day paper shredding event. In total, 4,389 pounds of documents were brought in for secure on-site shredding and recycling. An additional 146 pounds of cardboard were also collected.
Kimball International employees also joined the effort to support our local community’s environment. During National Volunteer Week, a team of volunteers from our Headquarters supported the Patoka Lake Visitor’s Center restoration efforts. Another group of employees representing each of our manufacturing plants in Santa Claus and Jasper cared for a nearby area as part of an Adopt-A-Street project.
