JZA+D Elevates Mark Sullivan to Partner, Looks to Future and Expanding Practice

Mark A. Sullivan

The full-service architecture-and-interiors studio Joshua Zinder Architecture + Design (JZA+D) has announced that Mark A. Sullivan, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C has been named a Partner with the firm. The move represents a concerted effort to continue the firm’s growth into several market sectors, in particular the planning and design of academic facilities, where Sullivan is a noted expert.

“Since joining the firm in 2013, Mark has established himself as a creative force and a client-focused leader,” says Joshua Zinder, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C, founding principal of JZA+D. “Whether directing one of the diverse range of projects in his portfolio, providing mentorship and guidance to members of our team, or communicating goals and strategies with our clients, Mark’s knowledge and experience have helped build on our recent success and growth.”

Zinder adds, “Mark and I also share common experiences. We understand and appreciate each other, making his appointment to a partnership a natural fit. He is also a close friend of many years.”

Sullivan’s experience spans more than 25 years as an architect leading a broad array of design and project management assignments for commercial, institutional, residential and government building clients. Prior to joining JZA+D, he worked for 11 years as a Senior Associate with Michael Graves & Associates — including several years when he and Zinder worked there concurrently — and for eight years as an Associate with Hillier Architecture.

A member of the Society of College and University Planning (SCUP), Sullivan has also served as a visiting critic at University of Maryland, the University of Kansas, and Syracuse University, where he studied architecture and earned Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees.

Prior to being named partner, Sullivan had been serving as studio director for JZA+D, leading and organizing the studio and staff on complex project efforts, and nurturing client relationships. Sullivan has contributed leadership and design expertise while working on a number of notable projects from the JZA+D portfolio, including facilities design for Rutgers and Princeton Universities, workplace projects for Boston Properties, worship space design for Temple Tikvah in New Hyde Park, NY, and the adaptive reuse of an iconic gas station into the unique eatery Nomad Pizza.

“Great projects come from great teams working well together,” says Sullivan, “and communication is essential to realizing each project’s full potential. Successful design solutions depend on close client relationships, and successful execution and project delivery depend on the architect’s ability to coordinate and rally design team members and project team partners.”

“I’m honored to join Joshua as a partner in the firm he founded,” he adds. “I look forward to continuing to contribute to the advancement JZA+D’s success and of our clients, and to the development of our talented staff.”
