Jamie Stern Furniture, Carpet, Leather & Fabric is excited to announce the winners of its 2nd Annual Furniture Design Contest.
Loic Arsac was named Winner – Western Region for the Ditto Chair. The Balance Chair by Lexie Armand was named Winner – Eastern Region. Each wins a fully upholstered prototype of their design.
“We would like to thank all of the more than 120 talented interior designers who submitted an original design to the 2nd Annual Jamie Stern Furniture Design Contest,” said Jamie Stern, Founder of Jamie Stern Furniture, Carpet, Leather & Fabric. “Your contributions made for an exciting month and we find ourselves amazed at the artistry, creativity and originality on display in the wide-ranging lounge chair designs we received.”
Winners were selected by a panel of esteemed judges, all of whom are either product designers or interior designers themselves, included Tim de Fiebre, furniture designer; Mitra Moshari, founder and principal of Moshari Studio; and Lara Moravak, founding partner and Design Director of Dutch East Design.
Ditto, the Winner – Western Region, was inspired by the concept of gathering: the angular seat and seatback are pitched at a slight angle to encourage relaxation while the wide base offers a built-in surface for drinks, books and more. The design also incorporates the concept of multiplicity: larger seating such as such as sofas and sectionals can be created by repeating the core design, further facilitating community gathering.
Loic, an Interior Designer at Yabu Pushelberg, explained, “As a designer, I always imagine furniture to be functional but also to bring values, emotions, and expressions of comfort to a space. Participating in this contest was a great experience that encouraged me to develop industrial design further, and that already inspired me to expand and create new pieces. I’m grateful that the Ditto Chair was able to transmit a message, not only to the juries, but also to the brand, and I hope, potential future users.”
The Balance Chair by Lexie Armand, which was named Winner – Easter Region, embodies the concept for which it is named. This lounge chair features thin metal supports balanced with a chunky upholstered seat and arms, as well as a three-legged design that balances stability with the illusion of a floating seat. The houndstooth upholstery also provides sophistication to create balance with the chair’s playful forms.
“Having my design selected as a winner among so many beautiful pieces is a huge honor that has allowed me to look back at my design work and see my evolution as a designer,” said Lexie, an Interior Design at BKV Group. “Seeing the shifts from my quirky high school furniture projects built from objects found around my family’s farm to my current designs including my Balance Chair submission is a great reminder of how far I have come, and keeps me eager for my future growth as a designer!”
