Introducing Ooty by Allermuir x SmithMatthias

Ooty is the result of Allermuir’s first collaboration with SmithMatthias. The simple, quiet yet robust stool is lightweight, stackable and designed to fit into a wide array of environments.

The objective for Ooty was to create a stool by repeating one component, this would eliminate waste and provide a sustainable format. The result had to be both visually and physically light allowing the material to take centre stage.

The design

Ooty is made from one component repeated three times with a simple top which holds the pieces together. The cut out in the seat allows for easy pick up, from the floor or a stack and makes it easier to move around. Details like edge chamfers, soft triangular shapes and an optional seat pad elevate the comfort of this product.

Ooty is equally suitable as a stool or side table. The multifunctional piece’s lightweight and stackable form allows for ultimate ease of movement. Making for a for a functional addition to commercial and residential settings – from an impromptu seat in the workplace, to a hotel bedroom, lobby or informal meeting area.

The process

SmithMatthias’ approach when developing a project is to jump straight into physical models and Ooty was no different. They started with scale card models and the form materialized quickly. They questioned whether the material should be metal or plywood and settled with plywood for a softer, friendlier, more timeless character.

1:5 scale laminated ply models were created to test the stack, followed by a 1:1 scale MDF model. The full-scale model allowed for the subtleties – proportions, tapers and details – to be refined before creating a more refined mold and 1:1 plywood model to test strength.

This 3D starting point defined the initial form and proportion which was maintained throughout Ooty’s development from concept to production.

Stacking

It was essential for Ooty to be stackable; it effortlessly stacks 6 high both with and without optional upholstered seat pad.

Finishes

Ooty is available in either clear lacquered plywood or colour washed in a choice of six colours with optional matching seat pads upholstered in Melange Nap by Kvadrat.
