Introducing Gaia — A Collaboration Between Armadillo and Barcelona Artist Carla Cascales Alimbau

Introducing Gaia, a newly launched collaboration between Armadillo and Barcelona artist Carla Cascales Alimbau, which blurs the boundaries between art, craft, and contemporary design.

The collection translates Carla’s sculptural language – rooted in nature’s imperfections and the quiet poetry of form – into six hand-knotted rugs that read more like textural landscapes than floor coverings. Each piece was made in India using wool, silk, jute, and linen, with carved gradients and layered pile heights that mimic erosion, tides, and terrain.

For Armadillo – the Australian-born, B Corp-certified rug studio known for its focus on natural materials and ethical craft – Gaia represents its most artistically ambitious collaboration to date. It’s also accompanied by Chiaroscuro, a campaign film by Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser (Dune, The Batman), exploring the tension between light, texture, and shadow. (View teaser)

Together, the series and film articulate a vision of slow luxury – design that transcends decoration to become an art form in itself.
