IIDA NY’s Hazel Siegel Student Scholarship Now Open

In Honor of Late Design Leader, Three Students to Receive Mentorship and Student Development

The International Interior Design Association’s New York Chapter (IIDA NY) is proud to announce the launch of its third annual Hazel Siegel Student Scholarship. This program serves to honor the legacy of Hazel Siegel, an acclaimed textile designer and chapter member who held numerous leadership positions and received multiple honors over 40 years of dedicated service to the chapter.

After Siegel’s passing in 2020, IIDA NY developed an initiative to honor her memory and all that she gave to the industry. Siegel, an acclaimed textile designer and chapter member, held various leadership positions and received numerous honors over 40-years of dedicated service. She also served as a professor of textiles at Pratt Institute for over a decade. For her commitment to the design industry, Siegel was named ICON in the industry by Interior Design magazine’s 75th-anniversary issue.

“There is no better way to celebrate her impact than with a scholarship that aims to nurture the talent of student members, providing them with the financial support needed to participate in specific scholarly activities such as trade events, competitions, courses, and volunteer initiatives,” said Jillian Allerton & Michelle Schutt, Co-Chairs of the IIDA NY Hazel Siegel Scholarship Committee.

In recognition of the Hazel Siegel Scholarship, IIDA NY was awarded with the prestigious IIDA Changemaker Award earlier this year at the association’s national headquarters in Chicago. This award celebrates outstanding chapter achievement, best practices, and program excellence along with exceptional efforts and contributions to the interior design profession and local community.

Next year, three grand prize student winners will receive an all-expense-paid, three-day trip to IIDA’s SHIFT Conference in Dallas, TX. The conference brings together an array of top students, educators, and design industry professionals for a multi-day professional enrichment experience. The annual conference includes: project and firm tours, portfolio reviews and mock interviews conducted by working professionals, an industry expo, continuing education for professionals, and a variety of networking opportunities. Winners will also receive a one-year IIDA student membership to the NY chapter.

The scholarship is open to currently enrolled New York State Undergraduate + Graduate Interior Design students in good academic standing. Applicants must be available to participate in the SHIFT Conference from February 13-16, 2024. Applications are due by Monday, November 27th, 2023, at 11:59pm.
