IIDA NY 2016 DESIGN THIS! Call for Students and Mentors

IIDA NY DESIGN THIS

THE CHALLENGE

DESIGN THIS! is an extension of the IIDA NY Speed Mentoring event and was created to further support students through active design mentorship with industry professionals. IIDA NY invites all undergraduate and graduate design students to participate in a design charette competition.

At the event, student participants will be given a design challenge (inspired by the Iron Chef America show’s “secret ingredient” cooking competition). Only at the event will the event sponsor reveal the product for the students to design, along with the concept and criteria involved.

THE EVENT – THURSDAY, APRIL 14 @ SHAW INDUSTRIES SHOWROOM

Students will be broken into small teams and will have 1.5 hours to complete the competition, including two “advice breaks” with Mentors (industry professionals) where feedback is given on their team’s design. Before awarding a winning team, each student group is allotted five minutes to present their final designs to a panel of esteemed judges from the industrial design and interior design community.

THE AWARD

The winning design will be realized as a prototype by the event sponsor and could have potential press/industry exposure. Should there be interest from the manufacturer in developing the winning design into a viable product, the contract & royalties would be negotiated between the manufacturer and the designing student(s) team. The DESIGN THIS! event affords students the following opportunities:

  • Work with other design students in a team capacity.
  • Receive in-the-moment professional design advice.
  • Have product design ideas evaluated by high profile guest judges.
  • A prototype of their (winning) design by a local manufacturer.
  • Potential press (of winning team and their design) in trade publications.

Mentors have the opportunity to advise young professionals in product design development and assist them in their career growth.
